The KUNSTFEST WEIMAR 2020, in conjunction with its ambassador Matthias Goerne, is continuing its »Premiere of a Painting« concert format, developed specifically for the KUNSTFEST WEIMAR. Following on from Georg Baselitz in 2019, we are delighted to have Anselm Kiefer create a new work for this year’s event. Kiefer is regarded as one of the most important contemporary artists worldwide. His paintings are often abrasive images of an impressive physicality, not least due to the materials he uses, and often referring to poetry or literature. For the KUNSTFEST WEIMAR, he has created a painting entitled »Secolo d’oro« (the golden century). It is inspired by a text by the Biedermeier period author and painter Adalbert Stifter describing the purification of a doubting man in the forest.
Weimar-born Matthias Goerne, celebrated baritonestar of concert and opera stages throughout the world, decided to interpret the painting by performing Franz Schuberts famous song cycle «Winterreise» considering Kiefer evoking the forest as a romantic topos, and more generally to take Kiefer’s scepticism towards contemporary art into account. He will be accompanied by one of his long term musical partners, pianist Professor Alexander Schmalcz from Leipzig.
An introduction to Kiefer’s work and oeuvre will be provided by Berlin-based arts writer Heiner Bastian, suggested by the artist and one of the most versatile personalities in the German art world. He’s particularly known as a curator and for his nonfiction books on art and artists of the 20th and 21st century, including the works of Warhol, Twombly, Rauschenberg, among others. 2018 saw the publication of his »Anselm Kiefer: Bilder/Paintings«, the first monograph on Kiefer’s paintings, in which he explores the philosophical, mythical and poetic references and methods in the painter’s work.
