The Berlin playwright and director Falk Richter and Weimar actor Thomas Thieme can look back on a long professional relationship. Falk Richter’s play «Under ice» starring Thomas Thieme premiered in 2004 and remained part of the Berlin SCHAUBÜHNE repertoire until the season 2019/20. Making use of this combination, KUNSTFEST WEIMAR is inviting Thieme and Richter to take part in a special encounter. Thomas Thieme will perform excerpts from his role of consultant Paul Niemand from «Under Ice», a biting analysis of language and ideology encompassing all of existence and challenging the consequences of a technocratic mindset. Falk Richter, on the other
hand, will read from his recent 2016 text «Safe Places» which explores where we are headed as Europe and what living conditions we are creating in the process. What kind of private and political strategies are there to address the challenges of an open society and how do we react to outbursts of xenophobia and nationalist self-assertion? Part two will see both in a joint reading of passages from their conversation published in THEATER DER ZEIT in 2018, before elaborating and expanding their focus to include current political events – including in Thuringia.
